A Bolt Out of the Blue

Horrible.
A junior at Carbondale Community High School was struck and killed by lightning Thursday afternoon during a track meet between Carbondale, Cairo and Carterville.

Witnesses said the storms had already passed and there was no rain or lightning in the area, she said.

The lightning seemed to come out of nowhere, and King said witnesses told her there was a "huge pop and that was it."
I guess when your time’s up, it’s up. But still. The storms were gone and this happened anyway? I know I sometimes push the safety limit outside before and after storms. Now I’m going to be a little more paranoid about it.

It's all part of the great "averaging", the great normative curve.

Most will be hit with lightning during a thunderstorm, while a few must be hit under a perfectly blue sky my friend.

It's all part of the design.

And no matter what precautions you may take - we're all just targets in this grand duck shoot.

We had a similar tragedy happen in Springfield when I was in my late teens. A girl was struck while playing softball under blue skies. Everyone, especially her family, was completely devastated. Still are.

Those of you that don't understand lightning should Google the term "A bolt out of the Blue" and learn about lightning. It is far more dangerous after the storm than during it.
